The Big Leap: Challenges Students Face Starting University

Leap

The transition from school to university presents multiple challenges for young people. Research shows that a key difficulty many students face is the shift in academic expectations, where students must adapt to more rigorous standards, greater independence, and unfamiliar teaching methods.

Unlike school, university requires self-directed learning, which many students are unprepared for. They often expect detailed guidance and frequent contact with staff, only to find more independent and less structured environments.

Mental health issues, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, are common during this transition due to academic pressure and adapting to a new environment and having unrealistic expectations—such as assuming university teaching will mirror school experiences—contribute to this stress.

While students may begin to develop independence and new learning strategies during their first year, many still struggle by the end of it. These difficulties can impact academic success and even lead to dropout or long-term effects on career prospects.

Developing a strong learner identity, including autonomy and confidence in learning, is essential and research recommends tailored help with academic skills, as students often feel overwhelmed by unfamiliar learning processes and expectations.

Academic guidance is one of the keys to helping students thrive in this transition. Lighthouse Learning Co. offers support to students making this transition through our Uni ready course.
