Academic Buoyancy
School life can be full of ups and downs—and research shows that helping young people build the right mindset and skills can make all the difference. One important area of research is academic buoyancy, which focuses on how students cope with everyday academic setbacks like poor grades, difficult homework, or exam stress.
Rather than waiting until a student is in crisis, academic buoyancy is about helping them stay afloat through the normal challenges of school life.
Researchers* have identified five key traits—known as the 5Cs—that help students bounce back and keep moving forward:
-
Confidence – believing in their ability to succeed
-
Coordination – being organised and managing time well
-
Commitment – staying motivated, even when it’s tough
-
Composure – staying calm under pressure
-
Control – feeling in charge of their own learning
At Lighthouse Learning Co, all coaching and tutoring has its foundation in this approach.
The intention is to work with students to build these skills step by step—so they feel more confident, more capable, and better equipped to face whatever school throws their way.
